## Part One: The Visitor The oil lamp had burned low by the time Ezra finally found his rhythm. He sat cross-legged on a reed mat in the small back room of his house, a smoothed sheet of papyrus stretched across a cedar board on his knees, a fresh reed pen tucked behind his ear. Around him, half-finished scrolls leaned against the walls like sleeping guests, and the smell of ink — iron and oak gall, slightly sour — hung in the warm night air. He was copying a record of land transactions for the temple administrators. Dull work, but honest work, and the lamp gave just enough light. He had written perhaps three lines when he became aware that the room was brighter than it should be. He looked up. The man — if man was the right word — was simply there, sitting on the low wooden stool across from him, as though he had always been there and Ezra had simply failed to notice. He appeared neither young nor old. His robe was the color of undyed wool, and there was nothing remarkable about his face except that it was completely, unnervingly calm, in the way that still water is calm — not empty, but enormously deep. Ezra's pen clattered to the floor. "Peace," said the visitor, with the air of someone who meant it quite literally. Ezra pressed himself back against the wall. His mouth opened. Nothing came out. "You are Ezra, son of Hilkiah," said the visitor. "You are a scribe. A good one — better than you think, actually." He glanced at the cedar board on Ezra's knees. "Though your letter *mem* has been running a little narrow lately. You rush it." "I—" Ezra swallowed. "Who are you?" The visitor tilted his head slightly, as though the question were both entirely reasonable and mildly amusing. "I think you know who I am, Ezra." Ezra looked at the lamp. He looked at the visitor. He looked at his own hands. Then he slowly, carefully, set the cedar board aside, straightened his back, and said, with tremendous effort at composure: "Lord." "There we go," said the visitor, and smiled. It was a good smile. Warm, a little tired, the smile of someone who had been working very hard for a very long time. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, and his voice became conversational, even collegial. "I want to talk to you about a project, Ezra. I need your help." Ezra, who had by now decided that he was either dreaming or had eaten something bad, chose to lean into the situation. He reached for his pen, picked it up off the floor, and held it ready. Because whatever else was happening, he was a scribe. It was what he did. "I'm listening, Lord," he said. God nodded, as though this were exactly the right response. "Good man." He settled back on the stool. "Here is the problem. I have made things. Quite a lot of things, actually — the sun, the moon, the stars, the seas, the earth, every creature that walks or swims or flies. I made all of it." A brief pause. "And I am rather proud of it, if I am being honest." "It is... remarkable, Lord," Ezra offered. "Thank you. But here is the issue." God clasped his hands together. "People — your people, all people — they are living in this world I have made, and they have almost no idea what it is, where it came from, how it works, or — most importantly — what they are supposed to be doing with their time in it. They are confused, frequently frightened, and sometimes terrible to one another, and a great deal of that comes down to ignorance and fear. They don't know the story." "The story, Lord?" "Where they came from. What the world is. How it began." God looked at him steadily. "I want to give them that story, Ezra. Not all of it at once — they're not ready for all of it. But a beginning. Something they can hold onto. A foundation." He paused. "A testament, one might say." Ezra turned the word over. "A testament," he repeated slowly, and wrote it at the top of a fresh piece of papyrus. Old habit. God watched him do this and looked quietly pleased. "The first thing I want to give them," God continued, "is an account of creation itself. How the world was made. How *everything* was made. The genesis of it all." He spread his hands. "And then I want to explain to them what I expect from them. How to live well. How to treat each other. What matters. All of that will come later. But we start at the beginning." He looked at Ezra. "Are you with me?" Ezra looked down at the word he'd written. Then he looked up at his visitor. "You want me to write this down," he said. "What you tell me." "Yes." "And then share it. With my brothers." "With everyone, eventually. But yes — start with your brothers." Ezra was quiet for a moment. Outside, a dog barked somewhere in the dark streets, and a child's voice called out in a distant house, and the ordinary world went about its ordinary business, entirely unaware of what was happening in this small lamp-lit room. "I will need more papyrus," Ezra said. God smiled again — wider this time, and with what looked very much like relief. "I had a feeling you'd say yes." He straightened on the stool and rolled his shoulders, like a man preparing to begin something large. "Right. Let's start at the very beginning. The creation of the universe." Ezra dipped his pen.

--- ## Part Two: The First Day "In the beginning," God said, "the universe did not exist." Ezra nodded and wrote. His pen scratched steadily. "Instead, all of the matter and energy that would eventually *become* the universe — every star, every stone, every drop of water, everything — was compressed into a single point. Smaller than a grain of sand. Smaller than the point of your pen, actually. Infinitely small. Infinitely dense." God paused. "Are you getting this?" Ezra had stopped writing. His pen hovered over the papyrus. "All of... the world? In a grain of sand?" "Smaller than a grain of sand. I said that." "And the sky? And the other stars?" "Everything." "How?" "That," said God, with a slight tightening around the eyes, "is a different conversation for a different day. For now we are just establishing what happened. What I did was disturb that point — that monoblock, you might call it — and it expanded outward in an extraordinarily rapid explosion. The largest event that has ever occurred or ever will occur. It released all of that compressed matter and energy in every direction simultaneously, and from that single moment, the universe began to unfold." Ezra was staring at him. "Go ahead," said God. "When did this happen?" "Approximately fourteen billion years ago." Ezra frowned. "Fourteen billion." "Yes." "What's a billion?" God opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. "A thousand million," he said. "What's a million?" A brief silence. "A thousand thousands," said God, with great patience. "So a billion is—" "A thousand thousand thousands. Yes." Ezra looked at his papyrus. He looked at his pen. He looked at the ceiling. "How," he said carefully, "would you like me to write a thousand thousand thousands?" "You would write—" God stopped. He pressed two fingers briefly to the bridge of his nose. "You don't have zero yet, do you." "I don't know what a zero is, Lord." "No, of course you don't." God exhaled slowly. "All right. We're not going to use numbers. Forget the numbers." "Gladly," said Ezra, with feeling. "Let us speak instead of epochs. Grand passages of time. The first epoch, the second epoch — each one an age so vast it dwarfs anything your—" God caught himself and looked at Ezra's expression. "What is it now?" "What is an epoch, Lord?" A short pause. Not an angry pause, but the pause of a man who has written an extremely detailed set of instructions and is watching someone use them to prop up a wobbly table. "A long time," said God. "A very, very long time." "Then perhaps," said Ezra, with the practical tone of a man who had spent his career making complex things legible, "we simply say *day*." God looked at him. "My brothers will understand a day," Ezra continued, somewhat apologetically. "A day they know. A day has a morning, and an evening. It has a shape to it. An epoch—" He gestured vaguely with the pen. "An epoch has no shape." God was quiet for a moment. Then something shifted in his expression — not quite defeat, not quite amusement, but somewhere between the two. "On the first day," he said slowly, testing the words. "On the first day," Ezra agreed, pen ready. "Fine." God nodded once. "On the first day, then. I created the universe. I caused a vast explosion — the greatest event of all time — in which all matter and energy burst outward from a single point in a great expanding light. And where there had been only darkness and formlessness, there was now light, and the world had begun." Ezra wrote quickly, his pen moving in steady, practiced strokes. When he caught up, he paused, re-read what he had written, and made one small adjustment. "I took a liberty," he said, and read it back. God leaned in slightly and listened as Ezra spoke the words — careful, rhythmic words, shaped by the ear as much as the mind, the kind of words that would survive being passed from mouth to mouth across the generations: *"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And the evening and the morning were the first day."* A silence settled over the small room. "Yes," said God quietly, after a moment. "That will do very well." Ezra looked up. "Shall we continue, Lord?" "Let's continue," said God. "Day two."

--- ## Part Three: The Second Day "Now," said God, "while all of that was happening — the expansion, the cooling, the first matter coalescing — the universe was also in the process of organizing itself. Gravity was doing its work. Clouds of hydrogen and helium were collapsing under their own weight, igniting into stars, and those stars were gathering into galaxies. This took several billion years." Ezra's pen had not moved. "Several billion," he said, in the tone of a man acknowledging a word he had already agreed to stop using. "Several very long times," God said. "Thank you." "And during this vast process, in one particular corner of one particular galaxy — an unremarkable galaxy, if I am honest, one of hundreds of billions—" "Hundreds of—" "A great many," said God firmly. "In one corner of one galaxy, a rather ordinary star was forming. Your sun. And as it formed, the leftover material spinning around it — dust and rock and ice and gas — began to clump together. Slowly, over millions of—" He paused, glancing at Ezra. "Over a long time. A very long time. These clumps gathered and collided and merged, and one of them grew large enough that its own gravity pulled it into a sphere. A ball. And that ball," he said, "was your world." Ezra was writing now, his brow furrowed in the specific way that meant he was keeping up with the pen but not necessarily with the meaning. "A ball," he repeated. "Yes." "The world is a ball." "It is." Ezra lifted his pen and looked up. He said nothing for a moment. "My brothers," he said at last, "will not like that." "I know." "They will say it is flat." "It isn't." "I believe you, Lord," said Ezra, in a tone that suggested he was choosing to believe this as an act of considerable personal faith. "But perhaps we leave the ball out of it for now." God looked at him for a moment, then conceded the point with a small wave of his hand. "We'll come back to it. Continue." "So the world formed," Ezra said, steering things back to safer ground. "Out of the... clumps." "Yes. And in those early ages, it was nothing like the world you know. It was a violent, chaotic place. The surface was molten rock — liquid fire across the entire globe — constantly bombarded by other debris still drifting through the young solar system. Huge objects smashing into it. One impact was so massive that it nearly shattered the entire world and threw off an enormous cloud of debris that eventually formed your moon." Ezra had been writing, but now he stopped again. "The moon," he said, "is a piece that broke off." "A consequence of an impact, yes." Ezra looked up at the small window at the far end of the room. Through it, the moon was just visible, fat and yellow over the rooftops. He looked at it for a rather long moment. Then he turned back. "I will also leave that out," he said. God nodded as though this were entirely reasonable. "Probably wise for now." "And the waters?" Ezra asked, his pen still hovering. "When did the waters come?" "Gradually. The cooling surface released water vapor from within the rock itself — volcanic outgassing, enormous quantities of steam rising from the crust. And water was also delivered from outside, carried in by comets and asteroids from the outer reaches of the solar system, ice that melted on impact and collected. Over millions—" He stopped. "Over a long time, this vapor cooled and condensed and fell as rain. Rain that lasted, without ceasing, for perhaps a million years." Ezra's pen paused mid-stroke. "A million years of rain," he said. "Give or take." Ezra looked at the ceiling briefly, as a man does when he is internally recalibrating. "And this formed the seas." "Yes. The water gathered in the lower places as the surface cooled and solidified. Great deep seas, covering nearly all of the surface. And above them was the atmosphere — a thick sky of gases, vapor, cloud. The waters above and the waters below, you might say, with a great vault of sky between them." Ezra's pen stopped moving. He looked up. "That," he said slowly, "I can work with." "I thought you might appreciate that one." Ezra was already writing, his lips moving slightly as he shaped the words, testing their sound before committing them fully to the page. He worked for a while in silence, God watching without hurrying him, and when he was done he straightened and read it back with the careful, measured cadence of a man who understood that these words were going to have to carry a great deal of weight for a very long time. *"And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day."* God was quiet for a moment when he finished. The lamp between them flickered once in some small draft, and the shadows moved gently on the walls. "The vault of sky," God said. "You called it Heaven." "It seemed right," said Ezra simply. "Yes," said God. "It did."

--- ## Part Four: The Third Day "Now," said God, "we left the world covered almost entirely in water. A deep, dark, featureless ocean, with a thick sky of cloud and vapor above it." "Yes," said Ezra, checking his previous work. "The waters above and the waters below." "Good. So beneath those oceans, the crust of the world was still moving. Still settling. The rock was cooling, shifting, cracking. Great plates of crust grinding slowly against each other — slowly by your reckoning, in any case. Over an immense span of time, this movement pushed rock upward in some places and pulled it down in others, and gradually — very, very gradually — the first dry land began to emerge above the surface of the water." Ezra was nodding and writing. "The dry land appeared," he said. "Exactly. Continents forming and breaking apart and forming again over hundreds of—" God glanced at Ezra. "Over a very long time." "Very good, Lord. You're getting faster at that." God accepted this without comment. "Now, this is where I need you to pay close attention, because this next part covers — quite a lot of ground." "How much ground?" "Nearly four billion—" He stopped. "A very *very* long time. Possibly the longest stretch of any of the days." Ezra looked up from the papyrus. "All in one day?" "I said the days were flexible." Ezra set down his pen with the careful deliberateness of a man who has learned that setting it down was faster than stopping mid-sentence. "You did not say that, Lord." "It was implied." A pause. "Continue," said Ezra, picking the pen back up. "For the first part of this long day," God said, "the world had land and sea, but nothing living. Nothing at all. Just rock and water and sky. But the oceans were warm, and they were rich with the right materials — and in the shallows, in the chemical broth of those early seas, something extraordinary began to happen. Small. Impossibly small. Smaller by far than anything you could see with your eye." "Smaller than a grain of sand?" "We've been here before," God said patiently. "Smaller than a grain of sand," Ezra agreed. "Molecules — collections of matter so tiny as to be invisible — began to organize themselves into structures that could do something no rock or drop of water could do. They could copy themselves. They could take in energy from their surroundings and use it to make more of themselves. They were, in the simplest possible sense, alive." Ezra had stopped writing. He was staring. "The first living things," he said, "were invisible?" "Yes." "Smaller than a grain of sand." "Much smaller." "And they appeared... on their own? In the water?" "With considerable help from the conditions I had arranged, yes." Ezra absorbed this. "My brothers," he said, for the second time that evening, "will not like that." "I'm beginning to sense a pattern," said God. "They will want there to have been a moment. A gesture. A word spoken." Ezra tapped the end of his pen against the papyrus. "Something that sounds like a decision." God looked at him for a moment. "The conditions that allowed life to emerge from that chemical broth," he said slowly, "were extraordinarily precise. The temperature, the composition of the water, the particular arrangement of minerals, the energy coming in from the young sun — change almost any of it, and nothing happens. The probability of it occurring by pure chance alone is—" He paused. "—is not a number I will ask you to write down." Ezra smiled despite himself. "Then perhaps," he said, "we might say that You *caused* the earth to bring it forth." "That is," said God, after a brief pause, "a very fair description of what happened." "Good." Ezra made a note. "So these invisible living things—" "They filled the oceans over millions — over a very long time. Countless billions of them, covering the seas. And for most of this long day, that is all there was. No creature you could see or hold or name. Just these vast, teeming invisible multitudes, living and copying themselves and dying, over and over, for an almost incomprehensible stretch of time." "That is not a very exciting part of the story," Ezra observed. "It is if you understand what they were doing," God said, with a hint of feeling. "Because all that time, they were changing the world entirely. A particular kind of these small living things learned to do something new — to take the light of the sun and use it directly as energy. And as a byproduct of this process, they released a gas into the air. A gas that had barely existed in the atmosphere before." "What gas?" "Oxygen. The air you breathe. It didn't exist in any real quantity until these invisible creatures made it — slowly, over more than two billion—" He caught himself. "Over an almost unimaginably long time. They remade the sky. They made it breathable. Everything that was ever going to live on land — every animal, every person, you, your children, every person who will ever read what you write tonight — owes their existence to these tiny invisible things that no one will ever see, doing their quiet work in the ancient seas." There was a silence. Ezra had stopped writing again, but this time not out of confusion. He was looking at the small window where the night sky showed, the stars scattered across it in their usual indifferent multitude. "I will leave that out as well," he said quietly. "But I am glad I know it." God said nothing, but something in his expression suggested he was glad too. "So," Ezra said, returning to the papyrus. "After this very long time, what happened next?" "Life became more complex. These simple invisible things gave way, over enormous spans of time, to larger organisms. Things with structure. With different parts that did different jobs. And eventually, in the seas, the first simple plants. Algae — great mats and blooms of greenery spreading across the surface of the oceans. Green and red and brown, covering the water." "Plants," said Ezra, with visible relief. "Now we are somewhere I can work." "We're not quite done," God said. "Because eventually, life made another crossing — perhaps the most difficult one. It moved from the sea to the land." Ezra frowned. "Plants moved?" "The first ones didn't move, they colonized. A slow creep — from the shorelines inward. Tiny mosses first, clinging to wet rock at the edges of the sea. Then larger and more complex plants, developing roots to grip the bare stone and draw water from the ground. The land had been nothing but bare rock until this point — grey and lifeless as the surface of the moon. And then, slowly, it turned green." Ezra was writing steadily now, his earlier hesitations giving way to something that looked almost like pleasure. "Grass," he said. "Yes." "Herbs. Plants that seed themselves." "Yes." "Trees," he said, and smiled — apparently there was something about trees that needed no explaining. "Fruit trees." "Eventually, yes. Great forests. More vast than any forest you have ever seen, covering the land from shore to shore. The world turned green, and it stayed green." God paused. "That was the third day. Land from the waters. And then life — first invisible, then simple, then spreading and climbing and growing until the whole earth was covered with it." Ezra was quiet for a while after that, writing and murmuring softly to himself, shaping and reshaping. God waited. The lamp between them had burned down and Ezra had replaced it without seeming to notice, the simple muscle memory of a man who spent his nights this way. At last Ezra set down his pen, rolled his shoulders, and read: *"And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day."* God listened to the whole of it without moving. "You left out the algae," he said. "I left out a great deal," Ezra agreed pleasantly. "But it's all in there, if you know how to look." God considered this for a moment, and then nodded slowly, in the manner of someone who has decided to accept a thing because the alternative would take longer than either of them had. "It is," he conceded. "It really is." "Shall we rest a moment before day four?" Ezra asked, flexing his writing hand. God looked at him with an expression that was difficult to read, somewhere between amusement and sympathy. "Day four," he said, "is going to require a drink first." Ezra looked up sharply. "That bad?" "You're going to want to put the pen down before I explain the order of events." Ezra looked at the pen. He looked at God. Very slowly and deliberately, he placed the pen on the cedar board. "Tell me," he said.

--- ## Part Five: The Fourth Day "So," said God, "the sun." "Yes," said Ezra, pen ready. "The sun. You created it on the fourth day, after the earth and the seas and the plants." He had already written the heading. He was poised and ready. He had, over the course of the evening, developed what he clearly felt was a productive working rhythm. "About that," said God. Something in the tone made Ezra's pen stop. "The sun," said God, carefully, "was not created on the fourth day." A silence. "I wrote," said Ezra, with equal care, "that the world was without form and void, and then there was light. On the first day." "Yes." "And I wrote that the waters separated and the sky formed. On the second day." "Yes." "And I wrote that the dry land appeared, and the grass and the trees. On the third day." "Yes." "And the sun," said Ezra, setting down his pen exactly as God had predicted, "was there for all of this?" "The sun formed before the earth existed," said God. "The earth coalesced from the leftover material spinning around the sun, as I explained yesterday. The sun came first. The earth came second." Ezra looked at the three days of work sitting on the cedar board beside him. Then he looked at God. Then he looked back at the papyrus. His expression was that of a man who has carefully constructed a very fine wall and has just been told that one of the early bricks is facing the wrong way. "So when I wrote, on the first day, *let there be light,*" he said. "The light was real. The beginning was real. The expansion, the great outpouring of energy and matter — real." "But the sun specifically—" "Formed about nine billion years after the beginning. Yes." "And the earth—" "Shortly after the sun." "And the plants—" "Cannot," said God, with the expression of a man delivering news he has been dreading, "grow without the sun." A long pause. "They were already growing," said Ezra. "I wrote that they were already growing. On day three." He picked up the papyrus and looked at it as though hoping it might say something different than he remembered. It did not. He put it down again. "My brothers," he said, and then stopped, because even the reliable formula felt insufficient this time. "Here is how I would like you to think about it," said God, leaning forward. "For most of the earth's early life, the sky was not as you see it now. It was thick. Opaque. Cloud and vapor and gas so dense that if you had stood on the surface — which you could not have, it was molten rock — but if you had, you would not have seen the sun. You would not have seen the moon. You would not have seen a single star. There was light, but no sources of light. Just a dim, diffuse glow through an impenetrable sky." Ezra was listening intently. "Over an enormous span of time," God continued, "the sky cleared. The atmosphere settled into something like what you breathe today. And for the first time, the sun appeared in the sky as a distinct thing. The moon appeared. The stars appeared. They had always been there — but now the world could *see* them. They became, for the first time, what they are to you — markers of days and seasons, governors of time." Ezra was quiet for a moment. He picked the pen back up, slowly, as a man reclaims something he had thrown down in haste. "So the lights were not made on the fourth day," he said. "But the fourth day was when they became — visible. Knowable. Useful." "As precise a summary as I could hope for," said God. "Given the circumstances," said Ezra, "I will take that." He dipped his pen. "And the moon and the stars — you want them all in?" "The sun to govern the day, the moon to govern the night, and the stars. Yes. All of it." "Signs and seasons," Ezra murmured, writing. "Days and years." He was moving well now, the earlier disruption absorbed and set aside with professional efficiency. He wrote for a while in comfortable silence, then spoke the words back with a calm, steady voice that suggested he had already, somewhere in his mind, forgiven the sun its premature existence: *"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day."* "He made the stars also," God repeated quietly. "I thought you'd like that," said Ezra. "Four words," said God. "For a hundred billion galaxies." "You told me to keep it simple," said Ezra, and dipped his pen again for day five.

--- ## Part Six: The Fifth Day "Day five," said God, "is one of my favorites." Ezra looked up from the fresh sheet of papyrus he was smoothing. In the course of the evening he had developed a small system — heading at the top, a margin on the left for corrections, the reed pen rinsed and retrimmed. He was, by any measure, the most organized amanuensis in human history. "A favorite," he said. "Should I be worried?" "Not at all. This one is mostly good news. The world is in reasonable shape by this point — land, seas, sky, sun, atmosphere — and it's time to fill it." "Fill it," Ezra said. "With life. Real life. Life you can *see*." Ezra's expression brightened perceptibly. "No more invisible things?" "Well," said God, "it starts with some fairly small things. But they get bigger. Considerably bigger." "Good," said Ezra, and poised his pen with renewed enthusiasm. "You'll recall," said God, "that the seas had been full of simple life for an enormously long time by this point. But then, in a relatively short period — short by the standards of what we've been discussing—" "A very long time," said Ezra. "A moderately long time," God corrected. "Shorter than the others. And in this period, something extraordinary happened. Life became — complicated. Suddenly, explosively, everywhere at once, creatures of all kinds appeared in the seas. Creatures with bodies. With shells and limbs and eyes and mouths. Every manner of shape and size, filling every corner of the ocean." Ezra was writing quickly, his pen moving with a confidence that had been hard-won over the course of the evening. "The seas swarmed with them," he said. "Exactly. Billions upon billions of creatures. And over time they grew and diversified — soft-bodied things, armored things, things with legs, things with fins. And then among them, eventually, something new — creatures with a spine. An internal structure of bone. Primitive at first, but from those first small fish the entire world of creatures you know — everything with a backbone, including yourself — ultimately descends." "Fish," said Ezra with satisfaction. "I know fish." "You're going to enjoy this day," God agreed. "The seas teemed with them. Every size, every depth — from the shallows to the darkest waters below. And life in the seas grew large. Great creatures, vast beyond anything swimming in your waters today — enormous and strange." "Great sea monsters," said Ezra, and he wrote it down immediately, with the decisive air of a man who has found exactly the right phrase and has no intention of being talked out of it. God looked at what he'd written. "I was going to say large marine reptiles and—" He stopped. "No, actually. That's better." "I thought so," said Ezra. "And then," said God, "life did something it had only done once before. It crossed a boundary. From the sea to a new world." Ezra looked up. "Back to the land? We did the land." "Not the land. The air." A pause. "Something flew," said Ezra. "Not all at once. First insects — small flying creatures, six legs, wings. Filling the air above those great forests we discussed on day three." Ezra wrinkled his nose slightly. "Can we skip the insects?" "You can skip the insects." "Then something flew," Ezra said again, more happily. "Eventually, yes — birds. Feathered creatures, light-boned, filling the sky. Calling to each other across the air. Every shape and color, from the tiniest to the great soaring ones with wings wider than a man is tall." Ezra was smiling now, writing steadily, and it was clear that this was the most comfortable he had been all evening. This was a world he could see, and hear, and smell. He was not wrestling with the invisible architecture of reality. He was writing about fish and birds, and he was a man of the ancient Near East, and fish and birds were exactly what he needed. "And God blessed them," he said, half to himself, half to God, the pen moving. "To be fruitful. To multiply." "Yes," said God simply. "To fill the waters." He was murmuring to himself now, the way he had on day three, the words finding their own shape, their own rhythm, falling into the cadence that seemed to come naturally when things were going well. "And to let the birds multiply upon the earth." He wrote for a while longer, then straightened, and read: *"And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day."* God was quiet for a moment after he finished. There was something different in the quiet this time — easier, warmer, like the difference between a man watching someone struggle up a steep hill and a man watching someone walk along level ground. "Great whales," God said. Ezra shrugged modestly. "It needed something large in it." "You're not wrong." God looked at him with what was, unmistakably, genuine fondness. "You know, Ezra, you are very good at this." Ezra set down his pen, rolled the slight stiffness from his writing hand, and glanced at the window. The night was still deep, but there was the very faintest suggestion, somewhere far to the east, that it was thinking about not being night anymore. "One more day," he said. "One more day," God agreed. "And then we rest." "Day six," said Ezra, reaching for his pen. "Day six," said God, and there was something in his voice — a particular gravity, warm but weighty — that made Ezra pause with his pen above the papyrus and look up. "This is the one, isn't it," Ezra said. Not quite a question. "Yes," said God. "This is the one."

--- ## Part Seven: The Sixth Day "The seas were full," said God. "The skies were full. The land, however, was still missing something." "Animals," said Ezra. "Eventually, yes. But first the land itself had to become habitable. The great forests were there, as we discussed, but the leap from sea creature to land creature is not a small one. Bodies had to change. Legs instead of fins. Lungs instead of gills. A whole new way of moving through the world." God paused. "The first land animals were small and strange. Low to the ground. Cold-blooded. Crawling things." "Creeping things," said Ezra, writing. "For a very long time, yes. But they diversified and grew. And among them arose a remarkable group of creatures — dominant, varied, some of them enormous beyond anything walking your hills today." Ezra's pen slowed. "How enormous?" "The largest were as long as ten men laid end to end. Some bigger. They walked on two legs or four, they hunted or grazed, they filled every corner of the land and grew into forms of such strangeness and variety that—" "And these are...?" Ezra gestured with the pen, searching for a category. "There is no word for them in your language," said God. "They were creatures unlike anything alive today. They ruled the earth for a very long time — longer, in fact, than the time that has passed between their disappearance and this very moment." Ezra stared at him. "These enormous creatures are gone?" "A great rock fell from the sky," said God, with the measured tone of someone summarizing an event that had, at the time, been significantly more dramatic than the summary implied. "A very large rock. Moving very fast. It struck the earth and changed everything — the sky went dark, the climate shifted, and most of the large creatures could not survive what followed." A considerable silence. "A rock," said Ezra. "A large one." "Fell from the sky and killed — all of these enormous creatures." "Most of them. Some smaller ones survived. Birds, as it happens, are their descendants." Ezra looked instinctively at the window, through which the pre-dawn sky was still faintly visible. He appeared to briefly reconsider birds. Then he shook his head and made a decision in the way he had been making decisions all evening — he picked up the pen, made a note of absolutely none of this, and moved forward. "Cattle," he said firmly. "Cattle and beasts and creeping things." "That covers it," God agreed. "Good." He wrote for a moment. "And then?" God was quiet just long enough that Ezra looked up. "And then," said God, "I did something I had not done before. Something different in kind, not just in degree." "Different how?" God seemed, for the first time all evening, to choose his words with particular care. "Everything up to this point — the stars, the earth, the seas, the plants, the animals — all of it was made, and it was good, and I was glad of it. But it was not — aware of itself. A great whale is a magnificent thing. A forest is a magnificent thing. But neither one looks up at the night sky and wonders what it is." Ezra's pen had stilled. "I made a creature," God said, "that could wonder. That could look at the world around it and ask *why.* A creature that was not merely alive but knew that it was alive. That could remember the past and imagine the future. That could take the raw materials of the world — stone, and clay, and reed—" he glanced pointedly at the pen in Ezra's hand— "and make something that had never existed before. That could, in some small but genuine way, create." The lamp between them burned without flickering. Outside, very faintly, the first bird of morning had begun somewhere in the dark. "You're talking about us," said Ezra quietly. "I'm talking about you," said God. Ezra looked down at the papyrus in front of him — at the neat lines of ink, the careful margins, the words that had been accumulating all through the long night. The full arc of it seemed to settle on him at once. Fourteen billion years. Invisible creatures remaking the sky. Great monsters beneath ancient seas. A rock falling from the heavens. All of it, the whole vast incomprehensible length and weight of it — and at the end, a man sitting in a small room with a lamp and a pen, writing it down. He was quiet for a moment. "That is a very great deal of setup," he said, "for one creature." God smiled — the broadest smile of the entire evening. "You have no idea," he said, "how much I am hoping you make it worth it." Ezra laughed — a short, genuine laugh, the first of the night — and bent back to the papyrus. He wrote for longer this time, and more slowly, as though the weight of the words required a steadier hand. When he finally read it back, his voice was different too — quieter, and more careful, the voice of a man who understands he is holding something fragile: *"And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it. And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."* The last words settled into the room like something physical. God said nothing for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was quiet and even. "Very good," he said. "Not just good. *Very* good." "I noticed that," said Ezra. "It's the only day you said that." "Yes." "I kept it in." "I'm glad you did." Ezra set down his pen and looked at what he had written — all of it, from the first day to the sixth, laid out in the small neat hand of a man who copied land transactions for temple administrators and had somehow ended up doing this instead. He rolled the stiffness from his fingers. He looked at God. "One more," he said. "You rested." "I rested," God agreed. "And so, Ezra, should you." He looked at the window, where the darkness had softened into the deep blue that comes just before the sky remembers it is supposed to be light. "You've earned it." "Let me write the seventh day first," said Ezra, reaching for the pen one last time. "And then I'll rest." God looked at him — this tired, ink-stained, entirely remarkable man — and said nothing. Just nodded once. And Ezra wrote.

--- ## Part Eight: The Seventh Day The sun was coming. Not fully — not yet — but the sky beyond the window had made its decision, the deep blue giving way at the eastern edge to something pale and tentative, the particular grey-gold light that belongs only to the few minutes before dawn. The oil in the lamp was nearly gone. Somewhere outside, the first bird had been joined by others, their voices threading through the quiet streets. Ezra trimmed his pen one last time. It was a small, habitual gesture, and he did it without looking, his eyes on the fresh sheet of papyrus before him. Then he looked up at his visitor. "How did it feel?" he asked. "When you finished." God considered the question with the seriousness it deserved. "Have you ever completed a piece of work," he said, "something you had labored over for a long time, something difficult — and set it down, and looked at it, and known that it was done? Not perfect, perhaps. But done. Complete. Itself." Ezra thought of scrolls finished, of a particularly fine copy of a legal text he had once produced that had made even the senior administrator look twice. "Yes," he said. "Like that," said God. "But more so." Ezra smiled and looked down at the papyrus. "And you rested." "I rested." "What does God do," Ezra asked, with genuine curiosity, "when he rests?" God was quiet for a moment. "I watched," he said at last. "I had made a world full of creatures that were finding their way through it, making their own small decisions, living their brief lives. I had made one creature in particular that was only just beginning to understand the scale of the gift it had been given." He paused. "I watched, and I hoped. That is not so different from resting." Ezra held that thought for a moment, then bent to the papyrus. He wrote slowly, the way he had on day six — not laboriously, but with intention, giving each word the space it needed. The lamp gave its last decent light and then began to gutter, but by then it didn't matter, because the dawn was doing the work instead, the room filling gradually with a clean, grey morning light that fell across the papyrus and made the ink shine. When he finished writing he read it through once to himself, silently, lips moving. Then he read it aloud: *"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."* The last word fell into a silence that was full rather than empty — the silence of a thing completed. Ezra set down his pen. Outside, the city was beginning to stir. A cart on the cobblestones somewhere nearby. A voice calling across a courtyard. The ordinary world gathering itself for another ordinary day, entirely unaware that in this small back room, something had been finished. Ezra looked at the pages laid out on the cedar board — all seven days, all the words, from the great light of the beginning to this quiet morning. He thought about the invisible creatures in the ancient seas, making the air breathable for a world that didn't exist yet. He thought about the enormous creatures that had never had a name, walking their long-vanished forests. He thought about fourteen billion — a thousand thousand thousands — years of darkness and fire and water and slow, grinding, patient, unstoppable life. All of it ending here. In ink. On a reed mat. In a house in Judea. He looked up to say something — he wasn't sure what, some word of thanks, or wonder, or perhaps just farewell — but the stool across from him was empty, and the room held nothing but the smell of ink and the smell of morning, and the growing light, and the pages on the cedar board, and the faint sound of the city waking up outside. Ezra sat for a long moment. Then he gathered the pages carefully, rolled them with the practiced hands of a man who had spent his life protecting words from the world, and tied them with a length of cord. He would make copies today. His hand would ache, and the administrator's land records would go unfinished, and he would have to offer some explanation for that. He would share what he had with his brothers, and his brothers would have questions he could not answer, and some of them would not believe him, and some of them would believe him so fiercely it would frighten him a little. But that was later. For now he set the scroll down gently on the cedar board, rested his ink-stained hands on his knees, and sat quietly in the morning light, a tired man at the end of a long night's work. And he rested.
